The 22nd Meeting of the Working Group on Prolamin Analysis and Toxicity (PWG) took place at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, from 27 to 29 September, 2007. Our host, Professor Conleth Feighery, welcomed the group, and invited speakers and participants from industry (cereal starch producers, producers of gluten-free food, manufacturers of kits for gluten analysis) as well as representatives from international and national coeliac societies who attended the meeting. The meeting took place six weeks before the decisive Codex Committee on Nutrition and Food for Special Dietary Use (CCNFSDU) session. Again, there were presentations of analytical and clinical research reports. In addition, there was a keynote lecture on the immunology of coeliac disease, followed by an intense discussion with special focus on the CCNFSDU standard on gluten-free food. I am most indebted to all participants for their active contributions, and in particular to Professor Conleth Feighery and Teresa Shaw of the University of Dublin, Department of Immunology, St. James‘s Hospital and Trinity College Dublin, for their hospitality and efficient organisation of the meeting. Their Irish hospitality formed the background for the significant progress that was made in discussions between the group and the participating organisations and delegates. I express my gratitude towards all friends, colleagues and sponsors for their inspiration and support.
