The 18th Meeting of the Working Group on Prolamin Analysis and Toxicity (PWG) took place at Scandic Sergel Plaza, Stockholm, Sweden, from October 2 to 5, 2003. The sponsor and host, Semper AB (Dr. Lars-Börje Sjöberg and Olle Ericsson) welcomed the group, invited speakers and participants from industry (cereal starch producers, producers of gluten-free food, manufacturers of kits for gluten analysis) as well as representatives from international and national coeliac societies who attended the meeting.
Once again, the meeting took place a month before the Codex Alimentarius Committee session (CCNFSDU, Bonn, Germany) in order to arrive at definitive steps in gluten analysis. Analytical reports included the PWG R5 ELISA method as well as other immunological and non-immunological methods. To summarize the latest progress on clinical studies addressing the threshold question in gluten sensitivity, a specific clinical symposium was held. Clinical reports and discussions on the prevention of coeliac disease and on Codex Alimentarius work completed the meeting.
